What is MLA 8th edition format?

MLA 8th edition format refers to a set of rules and guidelines found in the eighth edition of the MLA Handbook.  The rules determine how you format your paper, cite references, punctuation, and so on.

Basic components of MLA 8th edition format

  • Typed, double-spaced on letter-sized paper (8.5" x 11")
  • 1" margins on all sides
  • 12 pt. legible font (e.g. Times New Roman)
  • Create a header in the top right-hand corner that includes page numbers 
  • Works Cited page as a separate page at the end of the paper
