MLA 8th Edition: Citing Books

Basic Rules

When citing books using MLA format you must certain pieces of information in a specific format.  The pieces of information you need are the author, title, city of publication, publisher and publication date.  Additional information that should be include if it is available is title of the container, other contributors (editor, translator, etc.), and edition.

The basic citation format for a book is as follows:

Last Name, First Name. Title of Book. City of Publication, Publisher, Publication Date.

Example:

Porter, Gary. Water Does Not Flow up a Mountain: It Only Flows Downhill. Random House Books, 2021.


In addition to the Works Cited page, MLA format requires in-text (parenthetical citation).  This is used in any sentence where information is used from a source that is either a direct quote or paraphrase. The information required for a book is author's last name (or a shortened version of the title if there is no author) and the page number.

Examples:

(Porter 10).

Porter stated that "Insert quoted text here" (10).

(Water Does Not 10).

Water Does Not stated that "Insert quoted text here" (10).
