Historical Overview: Bishop Daniel A. Payne (B. 1881 and D. 1893) was the second President of Wilberforce University. He was also one of the university’s founding members and worked to purchase the original campus in 1855. He was a lifelong member of the A.M.E. Church and helped grow the church during Reconstruction. Payne Theological Seminary is named for him.
