Historical Overview: Central State University started as the Combined Normal and Industrial Department within Wilberforce University in 1887. This department was established by the State of Ohio. The department grew and in 1947, differences caused the two institutions to split. Central State was founded as Wilberforce College in the aftermath and has operated since 1947, officially changing its name to Central State University in the 1950s.
Payne Theological Seminary traces its origins to Union Seminary in 1844. The Union Seminary was forced to close and most of its material was sent to Wilberforce in the 1850s. The Wilberforce Seminary was officially named the Payne Theological Seminary in 1891 and ultimately became a separate institution from Wilberforce. The two schools share a library and maintain a close relationship.
